As I mentioned earlier, I tried various offers for internet telephony. First and most famous (read: hyped) one is Skype.
Pros: enormous userbase, good client, good quality
Cons: proprietary format. Not SIP compatible
Then there is Gizmo which is not so famous, but open source.
Pros: open source, SIP compatible protocol
Cons: small userbase
Because of the small userbase, I could not find anyone of my friends willing to test the quality. But hey, if you sign up, you get a free 25 Cent CallOut credit!
Another option I came across is WengoPhone which has started recently.
Pros: open source, SIP compatible
Cons: small userbase, and I could not get a call to a “normal” phone working correction: they started a CallOut service
I just tested this CallOut service, and it works reasonably well. I even could connect to a German 01805 number (something I couldn’t even with Skype), which was € 0,12/Min, according to the website. I had to pay less then that: ALLEMAGNE 8m 48s € 0,153. Quality was superb. I think I like Wengo
.
There are other options as well, like GoogleTalk or MSN or ICQ VoiceChat, but I have not tried them yet. If someone knows of another good client, please leave a comment. I quote from another blog:
If all the non-Skype softphones (Google Talk, Earthlink Vling, Xten, WengoPhone etc.) join forces and allow SIP calls to each other then Skype might be in trouble.
But until that joyful day, Skype will be the hype.
Last but definitely not least, VoipBuster.
Pros: for a deposit of 1 Euro now 5 Euros, you get unlimited free calls to any landbased (not GSM) phone in Austria, Germany, many other EU countries, Australia and the US. Quality is good.
Cons: no Peer2Peer functionality. You’ll have to use another client for that. And no SIP here either.
In totally unrelates news, Opera has now finally started to give the ad-free version of their great browser away for free! Grab it if you don’t have it!
