Last Day At Work!

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Today was my last day at work! Tomorrow I will be driving home from Heidelberg to Linz, I can’t wait to be back close to Elke again. The only drawback of this whole situation is that my diploma thesis is not yet finished, so I will have to dedicate all my time now to writing.

I’m free! No more working from 09:00 to 19:00 with only 30 minutes lunch break! No more slavery!

Well, to be honest, it wasn’t that bad… exhausting, but very interesting work. I am a bit proud of my achievements here…
EMBL logo EMBL Heidelberg – I will miss it (at least a tiny bit)

oh – I nearly forgot… the speed tests I mentioned earlier (see Blog Update) showed that a speed up factor (compared to a single CPU) of 50 to 70 times was not unusual…

Strasbourg

french flag

This weekend, Elke and I visited Strasbourg. Unfortunately, the battery in my camera was low and I had forgotten to bring my charger, so all I can present here are these 8 photos

Things to see in Strasbourg: cathedral (146m high, one of the tallest churches in the world), Petit France (old-town-quartier) and the European Quarter with the European Parliament. The “cuisine alsacienne” is a bit strange: the traditional food is a big pot of Sauerkraut with cooked sausages and bacon. At least the local wines are great! We drove south towards Colmar along the “rue des vines” and bought us some bottles.

A few hints: we stayed in a nice hotel called CIARUS (which seemed a bit youth-hostel-like to us, but our room was huge and clean and everything for a decent price). A restaurant we can recommend is Flam’s where we ate some delicious Flammkuchen.

Towel Day

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

Tomorrow is Towel Day! To anyone who cares, carry your towel around with you!

Elke and I will be in Strasbourg and of course we will carry our towels with us!

Code is Art

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

I just found a nice page comparing various coding styles and programming languages to art styles: Codekunst. Unfortunately, the page is in german, but since most of my readers (hello you 3 out there) are german native speakers anyways… have fun!

Spam can be funny too

I just recieved a funny spam mail…
Funny Spam

I had heard of them, but up to now I could not believe it. They even use a gmail address themselves…

Blog repaired

Saturday, May 6th, 2006

I am happy to announce that the RSS feeds are working again. It was a problem with the permalink-structure of my blog, it seems that Wordpress changed something in the last update.

I also chose a new theme, I hope you like it. I will continue tweaking stuff, maybe I can find some useful additions.

EDIT: I fixed the flickr-fscked page structure too. Now I can display this proudly:

Elke and I went to the Zoo yesterday. It was a wonderful day, and there were many people around, enjoying the free day with their kids in the zoo. Funniest thing was the little girl who cried loudly everytime her fahter was about to lower her down into the childrens petting zoo. It looked like she was afraid of those tiny goats.

Well, we were glad it was over when we finally left. It was nice to see a different zoo for once.

Visiting Speyer

Monday, May 1st, 2006

Yesterday, Elke and I visited Speyer, where we met up with k-thrin and lexx. The pixx are in my flickr-stream. In the evening, we ran around a bit in Heidelberg and had some fun with beer and cocktails.
