Terry Pratchett – Booksigning

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

Yesterday I went to see Terry Pratchett in Vienna, where he presented his newest book “Thud!” (now sold in German as “Klonk!”). The whole thing took place in the Theater Rabenhof, unfortunately my seat was a bit farther back. Some guy presented the book and asked Terry a few questions…

Terry also told a “dirty joke” during his explanations:

“A man went into a bar, carrying a crocodile. He put the croc on a table and challenged everyone in the bar to do as he does: he openend the crocodiles snout, unzipped is trousers, inserted his … ahem … part and hit the crocodile over the head. The croc blinked a bit, but did nothing more. Then the man looked around for someone to do the same. No one came forward at first, but after a short ehile an elderly lady raised her hand and said: “Welll, I’m willing to give it a try, but only if you promise not to hit me!”

After the talk finished, all the people stood in line to get their books signed.

I gave him my copy of “Thud!” and got a nice signature in there, as well as some buttons.

The best part: Terry loughed out loud when he read my “Will work for bandwidth” t-shirt :) .

Since some people asked for it, I also made a short video of a small part of the talk.

I drove to vienna by car, mostly because Elke joined me to visit some friends there. I filled my fuel tank in Linz and watched how much fuel I needed, simply because I wanted to compare the consumption to the money I would have to pay to go by train. There and back again I needed about half the tank, so i would guess about 25 Euros. That is the same amount of money I would have to pay to go by train – ONE WAY! I think the ÖBB is a bit crazy.

Weekend again

Yesterday, Elke and I went to the Feuerkogel for a bit of hiking and enjoying the nice warm days. It was really nice there, even though the paths are quite smoothe and not challenging anough for my taste.
I’ll put some photos in the gallery soon.
In the evenning, we went to the restaurant Akakiko for some — no, not sushi! Surprise there! — we had Chili-Sake (Salmon on sweet-chili sauce) and Kamo-Terriyaki (Duck with Terriyaki-sauce). It was a nice evening.

I also finished reading Thud!, the new Discworld novel by Terry Pratchett. Although it’s not as good as “The Fifth Elephant”, just to name one, I quite enjoyed reading it. Did you know, by the way, that one of the last books, “Monstrous Regiment”, was translated to German as “Weiberregiment”, which is one hell of a spoiler. If anyone ever asks me again why I like to read books in the original language, that will be my answer…

Totally incoherent things:

  • Currently showing on H-nes’ eye: my Lavalamp.
  • Elke and I probably will go diving next weekend at the Gosausee.
